the MyQ app garage door opener

Garage door opener

  • Available at: Lowes
  • Price: $139

Did the kids shut the garage door? Did I? I don't remember. But my phone does.

Chamberlain makes garage door openers and now offers smartphone connectivity for both its own overhead door openers and most other brands manufactured after 1993. Our Craftsman opener is only a few years old and a perfect match.

Installation of the MyQ was easy (I did it myself!) and I just had to make sure the WiFi signal reached the garage. Within 20 minutes, the system was installed with the Bluetooth light a solid glow. Add a few more minutes to upload the free app and the door was opened and closed with my iPhone.

The best part is the alarm option that sets the phone to notify you each time the door opens and shuts or if it's left open too long. It's also great for those who have misplaced the factory supplied garage door openers. My kids like that they can time the door to open as they walk towards the house.

To test the MyQ, my husband flew to Montreal and opened the garage door. My phone buzzed and, from the comfort of the couch in Calgary, I closed it.
