Radar detectors

  • Available at: KMPH.ca
  • Price: $600 to $1,200

Radar detectors are legal in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan, but for the rest of the country, any type of device that warns about a law enforcement speed gun is illegal.

Detectors beep just in time to let a driver slow down. However, police are shifting to LIDAR (light detection and ranging) technology whicn enables the speed gun to acquire a target speed in 0.3 seconds. The best radar detector can't beat that; speeders try to cope with LIDAR jammers.

Expect to pay at least $600 for a quality radar detector like the Beltronics STi Magnum and another $600 for the AL Priority Single laser jammer (below). If you are driving where speed detectors are legal, a windshield mount works fine. If you are elsewhere, there are methods to conceal the system. Be forewarned – once caught, police will confiscate your equipment and hand you a hefty fine.

The easiest way to avoid speeding tickets is simple: remove the lead from your shoe.
