Does Rover need a new ride? Here are a few practical choices for your furry, four-legged friends. After all, sometimes a stunning Jaguar XKR-S convertible ($146,000) just won't cut it – especially when a 170lb Great Dane named Luke is riding shotgun!

Please remember, when driving with dogs or other pets, they should never ride in the front passenger . And never leave dogs unattended in a vehicle, especially during the hot summer months.

1. Lincoln MKX

The best way to travel with your furry little friends is to strap them into a doggy car seat like the Snoozer Lookout Pet Car Seat. Savannah, Tori, and Micah sit comfortably in this Lincoln MKX all-wheel-drive CUV, which gives both driver and dogs a great view of the road. Prices start at $44,390.

2. Mini Cooper S

This Mini Cooper S hatchback does the trick for tiny dogs like Lola, and a high roofline translates into serious space for tall passengers, too. Prices start at $25,490. Add options such as 17-inch cosmos spoke black tires ($740) and a $2,100 “loaded package” with a front centre armrest and automatic climate control, and the price climbs to $31,610 as tested.

3. Land Rover LR4

Here’s the opposite of the Mini – the Land Rover LR4. It’s a luxurious and spacious SUV with three rows of seats for seven passengers and ample cargo space. Blind spot monitors keep you focused on the road when you’re distracted by chatty dogs like Prince in the backseat. Prices start at $59,990, or $70,990 for the seven-seater version.

4. Nissan Pathfinder

The Nissan Pathfinder may be big and brawny, but it’s also greener for 2014. The new Pathfinder hybrid has a supercharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder gas engine coupled with an electric motor – together they deliver 250 horsepower and return 7.4 L/100 km combined fuel economy, a 22 per cent improvement over the conventional Pathfinder. Prices start at $39,748.

5. Honda Crosstour

The Honda Crosstour is functional and all-purpose, especially in the cargo area. Two large dogs like Dixie and Banner sit comfortably, yet there’s still extra space for grocery bags and doggie treats. An under-floor covered storage area also keeps other precious items out of sight. Prices start at $37,545. (Globe Drive does not recommend putting dogs and groceries in the same area of the vehicle)

6. Porsche Panamera

Want your dog to travel in the lap of luxury? The Porsche Panamera 4S has all the comforts of home, plus serious performance power. A 3.0-litre twin-turbo V-6 pumps out 420 hp and 384 lb ft of torque. Prices start at $112,500. Add 19-inch Panamera Turbo II wheels for $1,790.

7. Nissan Murano

The new-and-improved Murano gets more available features such as rain-sensing windshield wipers, a power liftgate, a rear-view monitor with back-up camera and a large dual-power sliding glass moon roof, making the cabin light and airy for Fido and friends. Prices start at $34,498.

8. Ford Escape

The rear seats are just as comfortable as the front seats in this Ford Escape four-wheel-drive crossover. With safety features such as a blind spot detection system, it’s ideal when you’re distracted by rowdy dogs in the backseat. Prices start at $35,699 for this Titanium trim.

9. Ford C-Max Energy

The C-Max Energi is Ford’s first production plug-in hybrid. It’s fuel efficient; you can travel on electric power alone for up to 34 kms before the gas engine kicks in. Its boxy design also makes it practical for carrying pets and all your groceries. Prices start at $36,999.

10. 2014 Mercedes-benz C-Class cabriolet

For 2014, the E-Class cab gets a facelift with a sleeker design and more safety technology. Let Fido feel the breeze in his ears as you drive. Prices start at $69,800.

Some dogs don’t travel well...

... But they still know what they like. This stray dog was quick to mark its territory while on the 2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class cabriolet launch in Mallorca, Spain in 2010.
