When it comes to automotive technology, most consumers focus on infotainment systems or fuel economy. But vehicle safety technology is one of the most exciting areas of innovation.

Today, vehicle safety features extend far beyond air bags and anti-lock brakes. While Tesla has garnered the most positive publicity for its Autopilot "semi-autonomous" driving feature, many other auto makers have similar technology on the road as well. The biggest safety innovations have come in vehicles that can keep inside a lane and manage speed in traffic without human intervention. Hyundai's Empty Car Convoy video illustrated the effectiveness of this technology on their luxury flagship Genesis model by having its stunt drivers jump out while the vehicles drove.

You can't put a price on safety, but there are still deals to be had on many models featured on the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) Top Safety Pick+ list. Here is a full list of the 2016 IIHS Top Safety Pick vehicles with links to their current manufacturer incentives. We've featured some of our favourite deals with a Top Safety Pick+ rating below:

Volvo

2016 Volvo XC60

True to the Volvo name, the XC60 is a class leader when it comes to safety. The 2016 XC60’s Intellisafe system offers industry leading features such as a blind spot information system, active high beams and Lane Keeping Aid. The vehicle also features Adaptive Cruise Control, which keeps a set distance between the XC60 and other cars ahead, and its Forward Collision Warning system activates braking if the vehicle senses an imminent accident. To top it all off, the XC60 features pedestrian airbags which deploy across the windscreen to lessen the impact for pedestrians in the event of a crash. The XC60 scored “Good” in all IIHS tests and scored “Superior” in the frontal crash prevention test.

Cash purchase, finance and lease customers of the 2016 XC60 Special Edition can now take advantage of a $2,750 manufacturer incentive (compared to $1,250 in January). Financing for up to 60 months is available at 2.4 per cent interest and leasing is available for 48 months at 0.9 per cent.

Mazda

2016 Mazda 3

While officially classified as a compact car, the 2016 Mazda 3’s safety features are certainly fulsome: i-ACTIVESENSE safety technology is available as optional equipment on most trims, and includes a lane departure warning system, blind spot monitoring system, adaptive front lighting system and automatic high beams. Other features include the Smart City Brake Support system, which detects objects ahead and applies the brakes if no action is taken by the driver, and the Rear Cross Traffic Alert system, which detects vehicles from the side that are backing out of a parking spot.

Cash purchasers can now take advantage of a $500 manufacturer incentive on the 2016 Mazda 3 (compared to zero in December), while lease customers are entitled to a $1,000 before-tax rebate. Financing for up to 60 months is available at 2.49 per cent interest and leasing is available for up to 48 months at 1.49 per cent interest.

2016 Mazda 3 Sport GS Automatic

Lexus

2016 Lexus ES 350

The 2016 ES 350 combines luxury with standard safety features including vehicle stability control, traction control and blind spot monitoring. Consumers interested in additional Lexus safety advancements such as the Rear Cross-Traffic Alert system should opt for the Touring or Executive packages, while the Lane Departure Warning system and Pre-Collision system are exclusive to the Executive package.

Cash purchasers of the 2016 ES 350 can take advantage of a $2,000 after-tax manufacturer incentive. Financing for up to 60 months is available at 2.9 per cent and leasing for 48 months is available at 2.9 per cent.

2016 Lexus ES 350 FWD Sedan

Mitsubishi

2016 Mitsubishi Outlander

Consumers on the lookout for a seven-seater SUV with an exceptional safety rating should consider the 2016 Outlander. This midsize SUV scored “Good” across all IIHS safety tests and received an “Advanced” rating for its front crash prevention equipment. It also features first and second row side curtain airbags, driver’s knee airbags and a brake assistance system as standard equipment.

Cash purchasers and finance customers can take advantage of a $2,000 manufacturer incentive on the 2016 Outlander while lease customers are entitled to a $2,500 before-tax rebate (compared to $2,000 in December). Financing for 60 months is available at 0.99 per cent interest and leasing is available for up to 48 months at zero per cent interest.

2016 Mitsubishi Outlander GT S-AWC 6AT
