Oil and gas firm Husky Energy Inc. has named Asim Ghosh, a board member and former Vodafone Essar chief, as its new president and CEO.

Mr. Ghosh will replace current CEO John Lau, who is leaving the company after 17 years at the helm.

Husky announced earlier this year that Mr. Lau would be stepping down as CEO. He will move to his native Hong Kong, where he will head up the company's growing Asian business.

Mr. Ghosh joined Husky's board last year. He began his career at Procter & Gamble in Canada and has was also CEO of the AS Watson consumer packaged goods subsidiary of Hutchison Whampoa.

Husky, majority owned by Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-Shing, has refinery interests in Canada and the United States, heavy oil operations in Western Canada, offshore production in Atlantic Canada and a chain of retail fuel stations.

He will step into the lead role at Husky on June 1.
