3 top stock picks from contrarian Ben Stadelmann Add to ...

Ben Stadelmann is vice-president of Contra the Heard investment letter. His focus is on contrarian Investing.

Top Picks:

Sun Bancorp

Last purchased Nov. 2, 2010 at $3.90

Sun Bancorp´s turnaround has been longer and more arduous than anticipated. Progress is being made, problem loans are shrinking while commercial loan activity increased markedly last year. The bank remains well capitalized and continues to receive strong backing from billionaire Wilbur Ross.

International Datacasting

Last purchased Jan. 22, 2010 at $0.31

International Datacasting is dependent on capital spending by cinemas and broadcasters. Budgets in this industry have been constrained by difficult market conditions. The stock price is in the doldrums due to a lack of event drivers, like last year´s soccer World Cup. Perhaps the London Olympics will cue demand for IDC´s equipment.

Hemisphere GPS

Last purchased Aug. 18, 2011 at $0.81

Once the takeover of Viterra is completed, GPS Hemisphere will be our lone holding in the agricultural space. Recently the company reported record revenues, taking advantage of rising incomes for farmers. As a niche player, profitability has been elusive; if absorbed by a larger organization, margins could be improved.

Past Picks: March 16, 2011

Telecom Corp. of New Zealand

Then: $7.12

Now: $9.92

Total return: +110.31%

Gravity Co.

Then: $1.92

Now: $2.37

Total return: +23.44%

Sun Bancorp

Then: $3.28

Now: $3.31

Total return: +0.91%

Total Return Average: +44.89%

With the European debt problems moving from the front to the backburner, markets have enjoyed a broad-based rally in the first quarter of 2012. This has resulted in a rising level of complacency, which from a contrarian viewpoint indicates that equities are less attractive to buy now than they were last fall. Low interest rates and the U.S. presidential cycle will contribute to a mildly positive environment for stocks for the remainder of the year.
