WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

Bargains among agricultural stocks. The sector has taken a beating along with other commodity stocks in the global market meltdown. Still, there are agriculture bulls around like New York-based hedge fund guru George Soros. He was accumulating more shares of Potash Corp. during the last quarter of 2008, according to U.S. regulatory filings.

TODAY'S SCREEN

We looked at the stocks in the Claymore Global Agriculture exchange-traded fund (ETF), which includes companies ranging from food and fertilizer producers to farm equipment makers. The rising demand for meat in the countries like China and India helped fuel investor hunger for these stocks last year. The Claymore ETF, which trades under the ticker symbol COW on the Toronto Stock Exchange, tracks the MFC Global Agriculture Index. The ETF, which launched at $20 per unit in December, 2007, closed up 25 cents yesterday at $14.28. The fund's holding are rebalanced quarterly. The last changes took place at the end of last month. Tractor Supply Co. and American Vanguard Corp. were added to the index, while Lindsay Corp. and Smithfield Foods Inc. were deleted. We'll sort members of the ETF by expected earnings growth for next fiscal year.

WHAT DID WE FIND?

There are plenty of agriculture stocks with strong outlooks for earnings growth for next fiscal year and many of them trade at price-to-earnings ratios in the low teens and below.
