Archie, a Chinese Crested, is seen here prior to winning World's Ugliest Dog competition at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, Calif. in 2006.

Royal Bank

That vandal who spray-painted bank machines in downtown Toronto? Probably a disgruntled Royal Bank shareholder. Hurt by the high dollar and weaker-than-expected trading revenue, Canada's biggest bank posted second-quarter profit that missed estimates, prompting analysts to downgrade the stock. Hey, when you only make $1.33-billion, don't expect people to be happy.

Downsides of visiting Africa: 1) Being eaten by a pack of hyenas; 2) Catching malaria. 3) Having your mining rights abruptly pulled. In what First Quantum called an "obvious retaliation" for its decision to seek international arbitration on another cancelled project, a court in Democratic Republic of the Congo annulled licenses on its Frontier and Lonshi copper mines. The shares have fallen down a mine shaft.

Who has time to read books when you can fill your days tweeting about what you ate for lunch and watching YouTube clips of people armpit-farting The Star-Spangled Banner? Maybe that explains why sales at Borders Group, the second-largest U.S. bookstore chain, plunged 15.4 per cent and the retailer posted its seventh loss in nine quarters. Probably nothing worth reading in there, anyway.

Costco Wholesale

Only at Costco can you enter the store intending to buy milk and eggs and emerge with a set of steak knives, barbecue, 58-inch TV, bedroom set and backyard gazebo. With customers opening their wallets as the U.S. economy recovers, the warehouse retailer's quarterly profit surged 46 per cent. Shareholders are treating themselves to a shopping spree.

DreamWorks Animation

That Shrek is one scary-looking dude - especially if you're a DreamWorks investor. Shares of the animation studio plunged after the fourth movie in the Shrek franchise, Shrek Forever After, earned only $71.3-million in its first three days at the box office - far less than the $100-million analysts expected. At this rate, the next instalment might be called Shrek, The Funeral.
