Shaw Communications Inc. is launching a competitor to premium movie channels like TMN and Movie Central and the online streaming service Netflix.

The Shaw Movie Club will offer unlimited access to a selection of movies for $12 per month, with an additional $5 option to be made available later this summer for high definition viewing.

Customers can either access the movies on demand through their cable box — only in Calgary and Edmonton for now — on their computer, or through an iPhone or Android mobile app.

Shaw says it will have hundreds of movies available. Its website currently displays 139 titles, with some movies released last year, including The Town, The Expendables and Burlesque, and dozens of older flicks.

By comparison, it typically costs $15 to $20 a month to order a premium movie package on a TV plan. Netflix charges $8 a month for access to a catalogue of thousands of movies and TV shows.
