How to set up Watchlist alerts: Get live updates as your stocks move

Globe Watchlist alerts on an iPhone.

We've added a new stock-alerts feature to Watchlist for Globe Unlimited subscribers. Watch this video to learn more about Watchlist alerts.

These alerts will allow you to find out when the price of a stock you follow reaches a key threshold.

You decide the criteria for your alerts so they'll be relevant to you and your investment decisions. You'll receive alerts by e-mail on any device and in a new personalization tool called the Dashboard. Watch this video to learn more about the Dashboard.

Available only for Globe Unlimited subscribers, the Dashboard will appear when you log in to The Globe website from your computer or tablet. It will help you find content and timely information that's most relevant to you.

It's easy to set up your stock alerts in your Watchlist. Here's how:

Change your Watchlist view to "my alerts."

To set up an alert for a stock or ETF you follow, click on the "set" button under the "set a price alert" column.

A window will pop up where you can decide the exact criteria for your alert.

Check the box to the left of each criteria to trigger an alert based on that option.

The options are: When a stock or ETF rises above or falls below the prices you set; when it gains or loses 5, 10, 15 or 20 per cent in a trading day; when it breaks above or below its 50 or 200-day moving average; when it hits a new 52-week high or low; and when the analyst consensus target price has been reached.

You can find the analyst consensus and other price information about the stock or ETF at the bottom right of the window when you're setting an alert.

Click on the question mark beside each option for details about how it works.

You can select one or any combination of these options for each stock when you set up an alert.
When each criterion is met you'll receive up to one alert a day, every day the condition is met.
Alerts will be sent to the email address associated with your Globe and Mail account. You can adjust this by clicking "change" at the bottom of the window when you're setting an alert.
When you're done press save.
You'll see your alert criteria back in your Watchlist when you're on the 'my alerts' view.
To change your alert criteria after you've set it, click the set button again and you can edit your selections.

Here's what an alert looks like in your e-mail – as you can see the most important information is in the subject line to help you decide right away whether you'll make a trade based on the alert.  A link at the bottom will take you to the stock's page on Globe Investor.

And here's what alerts look like in your dashboard.

Click on the x at the top right of an alert to dismiss it.
