From the hustle and bustle of your daily commute to the chatter of your office to the serene quiet when you arrive back home each day – sound works its way into all elements of our lives and often affects us in ways we don’t notice.
In The Sound Of, hosted by music and arts journalist Carly Lewis, we unpack the sounds that define who we are and how we go about our days. We speak with various artists about how sound plays into their work, the noises that define them and more.

Episode 2 The sound of jazz
Watching jazz artists improvise is like watching a nature documentary: They use unspoken communication techniques and musical cues to tell each other what they’re doing, changing their rhythm on-the-go, without missing a beat. In this episode we hear from three award-winning Canadian jazz artists — drummer Larnell Lewis, pianist Jeremy Ledbetter, and bassist Mike Downes — about the secret language of improvisation and how the sounds we hear with each performance come to be.
The following video includes footage from drummer Larnell Lewis’ interview and live music session with bassist Mike Downs and Pianist Jeremy Ledbetter, taped at The Canterbury Music Company in Toronto, for The Sound Of episode two, The Sound of Jazz.

Episode 3 The sound of food
When we think of our favourite foods, taste and texture are often the first elements that come to mind. But sound plays an influential role in what we like and dislike. From the crunch of your favourite childhood cereal to the music playing in the background while you’re preparing dinner, what we hear when we eat, prep, cook and clean up after a meal plays a pivotal role in whether we like it or not. In this episode, we speak with acclaimed chef Sean MacDonald about the role of sound in the dining experience at his innovative Toronto restaurant, ēst.

Episode 4 The sound of graphic novels
Despite working with a visual medium, graphic novelist Mariko Tamaki tells stories that incorporate all senses, including sound. There’s a reason graphic novels can make you feel something in a way other books cannot. In this episode, we speak with Tamaki about the role that sound plays in her work.
This episode contains descriptions of two scenes from Tamaki’s books, Skim and This One Summer. To see how these scenes played out on paper, see excerpts from both books below. Use the arrows to toggle between images.
