They've been called "Canadian rock royalty," and reportedly chose red and white to decorate their Canada Day-themed wedding. But instead of selecting a local landmark as the backdrop for their patriotic nuptials – like, say, anywhere in Canada – Postmedia News reported Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger tied the knot in the south of France.

"He's Canadian, I'm Canadian. And we have a lot in common," Lavigne said back in April, when asked about her wedding to the Nickelback frontman. "Like maple syrup."

The CEO of Talent Resources, Lavigne's talent company, set off the rumour mill Saturday, after tweeting that he was in the south of France "about to see my little Rok [sic] star @avril get married." The ceremony itself, however, did not take place until Monday, according to Postmedia reports.

So why did the Canadian couple – Lavigne is from Napanee, Ontario and Kroeger from Hanna, Alberta – choose France for their "Canada-Day themed wedding?"

"[Lavigne] picked Cannes because she's spent significant time in Paris in the past few years and summered in places like St. Tropez," a source told E!News. "She's very immersed in French food, ambiance and culture. It's her favourite place to be."

Lavigne, 28, and Kroeger first announced their engagement last summer, after keeping their relationship secret for over half a year. The pair reportedly met while working together on one of Lavigne's albums.

When prodded a few months ago for details about their ceremony, Lavigne would only say that the themed-ceremony would be "quite spectacular." She did let slip, however, that she was planning on wrapping the couple's wedding cake with sheet music from a song they'd written together.

This was the second wedding for Lavigne, whose 2006 marriage to Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley of Ajax, ON, ended in divorce.
