Darcy Oake on Britain’s Got Talent

THE BIG FINISH

Canada's own Darcy Oake wowed the crowd and the judges, but he didn't take home the top prize on Britain's Got Talent.

Despite going all out with a death-defying stunt in his final performance, the Winnipeg-born magician finished fifth out of five finalists in Saturday night's live finale of the talent-search series.

For his final trick before the BGT judges and millions of British viewers, Oake was strapped into a straitjacket and suspended upside down by a burning rope six metres above the stage in an open bear trap.

Oake was allowed only 53 seconds to escape and narrowly missed the teeth of the trap as he wriggled out of the jacket and dropped to the stage with seconds to spare.

For his efforts, Oake, the son of veteran CBC sportscaster Scott Oake, pulled in 8.5 per cent of the viewer votes, which put him in fifth place overall.

The cleancut musical-theatre boy band Collabro were the winners of the competition with 26.5 per cent of the viewer vote.

Regardless, the BGT judges were suitably impressed by the young magician's sendoff appearance on the series.

Oake's final performance prompted BGT judge Simon Cowell to remark, "We are witnessing the birth of a star."

And to his credit, Oake remained true to his politely Canadian roots even after he lost the competition.

On Sunday, Oake went onto his Twitter account (@DarcyOake) to tell his fans and supporters, "Seriously I can't thank you all enough. This has been the most amazing journey of my life!"

HAPPY TOGETHER

Kim Kardashian said happy birthday to new husband Kanye West by sharing a picture of the couple kissing. On Sunday, the reality-TV fixture went onto Instagram to post the picture in honour of her rapper hubby, who turned 37. The black-and-white picture shows the pair smooching at their recent wedding reception and was accompanied by the caption, "Happy Birthday to my husband and best friend in the entire world! You have changed my life in more ways than you know! The way you look at life inspires me! I love you so much!"

CAGE MATCH

Who's that celebrity on the front of Nicolas Cage's T-shirt? Why, it's Nicolas Cage. The Facebook page for the touring version of Guns N' Roses raised eyebrows by posting a picture of the actor backstage at a recent show at The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. In the photo, Cage appears with comedian Andrew Dice Clay and is wearing aviator shades, purple blazer, cowboy hat and, perhaps strangest of all, a shirt with his own face on front. The cartoon depiction of Cage is believed to be taken from his 1989 film Vampire's Kiss.

DESIRED DIVA

Rihanna is the most desired female in the world, according to the higher powers at Spike TV. The Barbadian pop diva collected the trophy for Most Desirable Woman at last weekend's Guys Choice Awards in Las Vegas. Rihanna accepted the honour in a simple black dress – which was obviously more TV-acceptable than the see-through number she wore to the Council of Fashion Designers of America gala in New York last week.

MORNING AFTER

The unlikely musical teaming of Snoop Dogg and Psy has resulted in an even more unlikely single. On Sunday, the rapper and the South Korean pop star released the track Hangover, which, as the title suggests, focuses on the physical miseries that transpire after over-imbibing. In the accompanying music video, Psy is shown waking up after a night on the town and immediately purging himself. Snoop Dogg lends vocal support and assists his new friend in shaking off the morning-after blues.
