As Liam Lacey previously wrote about the Golden Globes: "The show, which kicks off the awards season, is a major entertainment publicity event that, in the last few years, has come into its own as an irreverent alternative to the Oscars, bringing together the top stars of television and the movies in a casual setting. The show's 19.7-million U.S. viewers last year made it television's third most popular awards show behind the Oscars (40.4 million viewers) and the Grammys (28.4-million)."
