BY THE NUMBERS
A new element may be added to the periodic table and it’s the heaviest ever discovered. Ununpentium (a temporary name derived from the atomic number 115) is produced when calcium is fired at a film of americium. A committee is deciding if to formally acknowledge the element.
Have you heard of the hedonometer? It’s a nifty thing that traces key words on Twitter and uses them to judge how happy people are on any given day. A graph shows that happiness in the U.S. dipped on Friday, Dec. 14 – the day of the Sandy Hook shootings. Why? Key words such as shooting, gun, killed, sad and tragedy were most widely used, and though the words kids, families and children were taken as positive connotations, they were being used to describe a negative event. Dec. 13 had a happiness average of 5.98. On the 14th it dropped to 5.89, the graph shows. Interestingly, the happiest days measured between September, 2008, and now were Christmas of every year. So far this year, Valentine’s Day was the one most full of positive social-media words. The team responsible for the project has talked about enlarging it to include more networks besides Twitter, and other countries besides the U.S.
Hospital patients have surprised the BBC by sharing photos of seemingly less-than-edible food offered up while they were in their NHS England hospital beds. Apparently, the taste has never been incredible, but now the presentation has been captured for the world to see. And it’s … lacking. The BBC got chefs to comment on the foods and even top chefs weren’t able to identify everything shown in the photos. One dish that a reader identified as “chicken” was said to look like “eczema” by a chef. “I wouldn’t touch it,” he said of the stiff and cold-looking food. Another photo shows just a dry baked potato on a plate with carrots and peas and no protein in sight. Though hospitals may face budget cuts, campaigners in England are pushing for better and healthier food for patients.
“If you ever even consider doing something like that, I promise you that I will run up and twerk so you will see how ridiculous twerking looks.”
