Like 17th-century art and architecture, this season’s beauty looks tend toward the flamboyant: Think hair, nails and makeup fit for a drama queen

BLINGED-OUT BROWS: At Chanel’s fall show, creative director of makeup Peter Philips reached a new level of eccentricity by covering models’ brows with colourful stones and crystals, an effect replicated here. For a subtler take, apply a few Swarovski crystals above or below the brow line or to the inner corners of the eyes. Try: Eye Rock Swarovski crystal temporary eye tattoo in Twilight, $20 through www.ebeauty.ca. Opening Ceremony top, $398 at The Bay (www.thebay.com).Arkan Zakharov/The Globe and Mail

WELL IN HAND: “Luxe nails are an extension of fall’s extravagant clothing,” says manicurist Leeanne Colley, who created the shimmery style shown here.To get the look, paint two nails in a dark hue and, while they’re wet, dip each into a pot of glitter. Repeat, two at a time, until all 10 are sparkling. Next, apply a clear top coat in random strokes and then roll nails over micro beads placed on a piece of foil. Pat beads down gently and air dry for 10 minutes. Try: Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour in Black Satin, $27 through www.chanel.com. Revlon Extra Life No Chip Top Coat, $6.50 at drugstores and mass-market retailers nationwide. Kate Spade ring, $80 at Holt Renfrew (www.holtrenfrew.com).Arkan Zakharov/The Globe and Mail

MAKING THE BRAID: French and fishtail braids are so last season; instead, mimic the elaborate rope-like plaits at Fendi and Emilio Pucci’s fall shows. Inspired by the cording and piping of Baroque textiles, these serpentine braids are easy to achieve. Begin by sectioning hair in two, then twist each section. Wrap the two sections around one another in a clockwise motion and secure with bobby pins. Smooth flyaway strands with a frizz-taming oil. Try: Moroccan Oil Hydrating Styling Cream, $37 at fine salons nationwide. Lanvin dress, $2,595, Oscar de la Renta earrings, $345 at Holt Renfrew.Arkan Zakharov/The Globe and Mail

LIP SERVICE: Kiss summer’s bright lipstick goodbye in favour of a matte shade that is close to your natural skin tone. To ensure a pleasantly pale effect (rather than an ashen one) over all, apply a barely-there sweep of pink blush across the apples of your cheeks, blending out toward the temples. Try: Burberry Lip Cover in Nude Beige No. 01, $36 at select Holt Renfrew stores (www.holtrenfrew.com)Arkan Zakharov/The Globe and Mail

JEWELS IN THE CROWN: During the Baroque period, ladies wore their hair in tight curls called “heartbreakers.” This season, Dolce & Gabbana and Oscar de la Renta aimed for a similar look via dazzling hairpieces. Keep yours looking modern by pairing it with slightly dishevelled locks. A few spritzes of a matte-finish texturizer will ensure that your tiara – and not your mane – is what does the shining. Try: Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray, $44 at select Holt Renfrew stores. Carole Tanenbaum diamante hairpiece, $1,250 at White (www.whitetoronto.com). Alan Anderson earrings at Holt Renfrew. Joeffer Caoc top, $495 through www.joeffercaoc.com. GALLERY CREDITS: Hair and makeup by Cody Alain Editor's note: The Carole Tanenbaum diamante hairpiece is $1,250.
