The question: Does waxing at home really work or is this something better left in the hands of a professional. If I can do it at home, what do you recommend?

The answer: If you've got the guts to do it yourself, it's a good idea to test out a few types of waxes to see which one works best. Try cold waxes first as they are easier to work with than heated ones. Make sure you follow the instructions to the letter, too. When you're told to "hold the skin taught," do so; otherwise, you could wind up with unsightly leftover hairs or, worse, some missing skin. The Andrea Water Soluble Cold Wax kit comes with a heavenly-smelling wax and all the accoutrements you'll need to get the job done right. But, if you screech in pain every time you pluck an eyebrow hair, I say seek professional help (for the waxing, that is). That way, you have someone else to blame for the wretched pain you're going through.
