My partner needs to update his hairstyle. How do I tell him? Add to ...

The question

My partner has very soft, fine hair (but lots of it) and will only use gel to keep it in place. It holds all day, but his hair looks wet and dated. How can I get him to try a more natural look without upsetting him?

The answer

Whatever you do, don’t tell him that you hate the way his hair looks!

People can be more sensitive about this stuff than they let on, so perhaps dropping a few hints might be the best way to go. Talking about the hairstyles of athletes or celebrities that he admires is a good approach. You can also try catching him before he has added any gel and slip in a styling wax or paste instead. These products aren’t as stiff as gel when dry and they’ll add a sheen as opposed to a gloss, which will look natural and healthy. Joico’s Structure Twist Styling Gum holds well, delivers a soft shine and, I’ll bet, smells better than any gel he’s using.
