The promise

The latest addition to the NARS lipstick family, Pure Matte promises optimal long-lasting colour, an ultra-matte finish and a hydrating lip treatment.

How it works

Story continues below advertisement

With a host of antioxidants like vitamin E and acai oil, Pure Matte claims to nourish and condition lips. Also, the addition of wild mango butter promises advanced nourishing properties to repair a dry, scaly pout.

How to use it

Apply directly to lips from the tube or with a lip brush.

The bottom line

The colour is definitely matte and intense, and delivers a dramatic punch. But it's not nearly moisturizing enough to go on without applying lip balm first, and when I went to touch it up with a reapplication, it felt like I was rubbing red chalk on my lips. It does last, though. Not through a messy bowl of pho I was eating, mind you, but it'll definitely get you through an air-kissy cocktail party with champagne, hors d'oeuvre, amuse-bouche, petits fours and any other fancy French words for "you'll go home hungry."
