The question

My manicurist always asks whether I'd like square or rounded nails. Is one shape preferable?

The answer

If you're trying to keep up with the current trends, then you've got a couple of options to choose from.

While pointed, talon-length nails are slowly on the way out, the shorter "stiletto" nail is still trendy. This nail is filed to a peak and then slightly dulled so as not to poke yourself in the eye.

If you're a touch more conservative but want to keep up with the catwalk, you can go for the classic (and still fashionable) shorter-length nail with a rounded or oval-shaped edge. Paired with this season's nude and pastel polishes, it's universally flattering and easy to maintain.

A square shape does have one thing going for it, however: It looks great on longer nails. Keep in mind, though, that nail-shape preferences are subjective. If you happen to like your nails slightly more squared off, go for it. If you like them tapered or rounded, then that's just fine, too.
