The question

I walk outside a lot in the winter, so fashionable uninsulated boots don't cut it for me. Can you recommend a boot that will keep me warm while also looking stylish?

The answer

The warmest boots will tackle the elements from the outside and from within. If, for instance, a boot is lined in shearling but is not waterproof, it will keep your toes toasty only as long as no slush seeps in. Wellington-style rubber boots, on the other hand (or foot), keep water out but offer little comfort in the cold. Look for a boot that combines an insulated interior with a protective exterior – ideally a thick, flat rubber base and techno fabric upper. All-leather is also an option, but salt stains will be a nagging concern.

I am loath to single out just one brand that offers fashionable-yet-foot-warming styles, so here is my short list: Sorel, Roots, Timberland, Aquatalia and UGG Australia (but not the classic version). And don't underestimate the importance of good wool socks. The alternative is three months of cold feet.
