While it might be premature for us all to scream for ice cream, guys at least can indulge in the sorbet-coloured slacks that designers are serving up this spring. A fresh alternative to chinos and dark denim, vividly hued pants melt the winter blues and liven up the boardroom. Here's to bright thighs ahead.

1) What's your flavour? Whether it's raspberry red or blueberry blue, whatever colour you favour will do. There is only one rule: Stay away from pleats, please. Modern styles should fit close to the body.

2) Pairing bright pants with other items successfully can be a rocky road. To keep it new, opt for light or similarly bright pieces on top, as at Jil Sander's spring presentation (above left). Avoid black at all costs to avoid looking stale.

3) Cool off with a softer footwear. Suede loafers in a lighter shade of beige or brown would do, but absolutely no white shoes allowed. They will look too odd with the mix.
