It doesn't take superhuman intelligence to figure out transitional dressing, although sometimes it might feel that way given the eclectic temperatures that arrive with early autumn. You also don't need to be in pursuit of vigilante justice to rock a cape, the topper of choice on this season's runways – and on workplace warriors looking to stay warm. Here's how to fight the chill this fall (no superpowers required).

1. When it comes to the cape, a tailored version is best. A knit one will read too soft and casual. Look to Lanvin's fall presentation for guidance – the toppers were clean, polished, minimal and business-appropriate in weighty wool blends.

2. To avoid added bulk, don't wear a suit jacket underneath. In early fall, it's usually still warm enough to wear a silk blouse or button-up on its own. If you must wear a jacket at work, keep one handy at the office.

3. The best thing about this seasonal piece? It's easy to pair with office staples already in your closet (dressy trousers, pencil skirts). Just make sure you choose one in a classic shade like black, navy or camel.
