Is it okay to wear short boots with a mini and tights?

Lewis Whyld/Press Association

The question

I love my leather Chelsea boots and I want to wear them with everything, but I'm worried I might be breaking a taboo when I wear them with a miniskirt and tights. Am I?

Is eating chocolate for breakfast taboo? It may not be as quotidian as oatmeal, but it's hardly forbidden. In fashion, as in food, flexibility is the only rule.

Just bear in mind that Chelsea boots – which became popular during Victorian times as horse-riding footwear – end just above the ankle, so brightly coloured tights will create an abrupt break between leg and foot.

Stick to opaque black hosiery, go easy on the volume on top (for balance) and you're hot to trot.
