Sparkle and shine at the office in a sequined jacket Add to ...

The sequined jacket was a much-loved staple of Michael Jackson’s, but its uses this season extend far beyond stadium shows and zoo-keeping at Neverland. With designers working the sparkly stuff into more casual separates and day wear, taking a special-occasion garment into the everyday can be easy. Here’s how to do it (the matching chimp is optional).

1. When wearing such a statement piece, keep the rest of your look as neutral as possible. The simplest way is to stick to a monochromatic palette (we suggest white as the weather heats up) and add a jacket in a bolder shade.

2. While Riccardo Tisci went for a disco-ball effect in his Givenchy runway collection, you don’t want to go head to toe with glitter. Take your cue from the cut of the blazer − structured and stiff − and pair with a slim trouser.

3. Keeping your accessories light will help shift the tone from formal to professional. Opt for stud earrings or a single bangle that will pick up some of the glitter.
