What looks will keep my wardrobe on trend this fall? Add to ...

The question

I have a limited budget to work with, but I want to make sure my wardrobe looks up-to-date this fall. What patterns, colours or styles should I look for to keep on top of the trends?

The answer

Lately, the consensus among fashion editors and stylists is that we’re living in a post-trend era in which style is not dictated by hemline heights, particular patterns or shoe silhouettes. Fashion, however, is an industry that survives on newness; so every season, certain themes emerge and manufacturers hope we buy into them.

I could tell you that a deep shade of Bordeaux is the colour for fall, appearing on footwear, handbags, jeans and even lingerie. I could also tell you that anything in a geometric pattern (as in Prada’s collection) feels fresher this season than colourblocking (soooo spring 2012!) and that motorcycle boots and loafers with stacked heels are what you should have on your feet until the snow hits.

But really (and especially if you’re on a limited budget), I will tell you that, if you put personal panache into your look, anything goes.
