It was an evening to honour music man Gary Slaight on Wednesday as he received the Edmund C. Bovey Award from Business for the Arts for his philanthropy. Mr. Slaight was joined in the picturesque backyard of the Canadian Film Centre in Toronto by top dogs in the arts and culture scene, including centre founder Norman Jewison, director Atom Egoyan, Jian Ghomeshi and Rick Mercer. Mr. Jewison, always the entertainer, gave the intimate crowd a little show when he sang All That Jazz with wife Lynne during his speech. It was the performance by Allie Hughes, however, that was the real treat. Rumoured to be Mr. Slaight’s new starlet, the Doc Martens-shod ingenue wowed the crowd with her Kate Bush-esque tunes.
