Now that school is out, all the parents out there are probably aiming to fill their kids' time with some constructive activities until September rolls around again. Among other options, why not hone their future social skills by having them plan a kid-friendly dinner party? The following ideas are ideal for an end-of-term gathering for themselves and their chums. They could also apply to birthday parties or sleepovers throughout the summer.

Step one: jazzing up the requisite kid-friendly menu. For a colourful twist - and easy cleanup - serve kid favourites such as mac and cheese and fish and chips in vibrant Asian takeout containers. For dessert, put together a DIY sundae station complete with ice cream, sprinkles, cups and cones. If the kids are older than 10, set up a self-serve beverage bar, including a selection of juices, syrups and even fresh fruit garnishes on skewers that junior hosts and guests can assemble themselves.

Step two: an all-in-one table covering/centrepiece/activity centre. Before setting the table, roll out a sheet of white kraft paper (any office-supply or art store will have it) across the surface, restaurant-style. Stick an array of coloured pencils into an inexpensive foam mould (picked up at that same art store - they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes) and place in the centre of the table, creating an unusual centrepiece in the process. Assemble your place settings as usual. I guarantee that - before, during and after the meal - no encouragement will be needed by the kids to transform the plain white table runner into a magical work of art that can later be rolled up and kept as a memento of their little summer soirée.

Finally, step three: Retiring - perhaps with a gin and tonic - to another room, leaving the kids to have their fun and poking your head in every so often. Happy summer!
