It's November. It's dreary. You can't get up in the morning. Why bother being social at lunch only to get caught up in a "Cold out, huh?" conversation. Hunker down at your desk instead with rich fishy 'wich. Pretend you're in Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea, only the marlin is smaller. The struggle is just as tough.

Just the sight of the little fish will keep the cheerful Tim Horton combo crowd away.

Ingredients

1 small beet

lime juice

olive oil

salt and pepper

fresh, chopped cilantro

sardines

rye bread

Method

Peel and grate one small beet. Toss with fresh lime juice, olive oil, salt and pepper, and fresh, chopped cilantro. Bring to the office in an air-tight container.

Butter two pieces of thin, European rye. Top with the beet salad and as many sardines (packed in oil) as you think you – and your office mates – can handle.
