Elvis fans may argue with you, but the bacon, banana and peanut butter sandwich has been tied as closely to the King as his Blue Suede Shoes. Born Jan. 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Miss., Elvis would have been celebrating his 78th birthday this week – perhaps with one of these babies.

You didn't really want to start that New Year's diet yet, did you? Nah, didn't think so.

Ingredients

White bread, sliced

Peanut butter

Banana, cut into slices

Bacon, cooked and crumbled

Red currant jelly

Method

This sandwich is all about texture: Spread soft white bread with a satisfyingly crisp crust, creamy peanut butter. Add slices of yielding banana and enliven with the crunch of salty, crumbled bacon. Add red currant jelly for some swagger in his honour.
