wine review

This is considered by many to be the Vermouth of the gods. Easy to see why. It’s much more complex and mind-bendingly flavoured than the less-expensive big brands that most bars rely on for their Manhattans and Negronis. The colour is mid-amber and the aroma akin to sponge cake soaked in rum. That rum-cake essence carries through on the palate, joined by orange peel, cola, spices and a nutty character that suggests Amontillado sherry. Bottled at 16.5-per-cent alcohol, it’s delectable and wonderfully chewy at room temperature and great on ice (no orange-slice garnish necessary). But should you want to build the ultimate Manhattan or Negroni, Bob’s your uncle. Or, rather, Giuseppe is. Available in Ontario at $16.95 for a half-bottle, $18.99 in B.C., various prices in Alberta, $43.50/1-litre in Quebec.
