best of b.c. beer

This Penticton brewery got its start a dozen years ago in an old cannery, one of many fruit and vegetable packing plants that bought the farm, so to speak, as the market for traditional produce gave way to grapes in the Okanagan Valley. This beer also reverberates with the name of another institution, the Country Squire restaurant in Naramata, just outside Penticton, which was run by Ron and Patt Dyck, now partners in this craft brewery with brewmaster Terry Schoffer. Mid-copper in colour, it's malty and on the sweet side even for a Scotch ale, with classic nuances of caramel and smoke. A good partner for cheeses.
