Descendientes De J. Palacios Petalos 2010, Spain

Red blend
Food Pairing
Baked ham or appetizers built around prosciutto (or fine Spanish Serrano ham)
$23.95 in Ontario

Mencia, the local grape of the trendy Bierzo region in northern Spain, is sort of an Iberian analogue to gamay of Beaujolais fame. This excellent 2010 vintage from the famed Palacios family is like top-flight Beaujolais crossed with great Côtes du Rhône, aromatic and brimming with crisp berries, black pepper and Provençal herbs, set against lightly astringent tannins. Pair it with baked ham or appetizers built around prosciutto (or fine Spanish Serrano ham). $20.55 in Quebec, $34.49 in Nova Scotia.
