Wine review: The Wolftrap Syrah Mourvèdre Viognier 2013, South Africa

Food Pairing
Gamey red meats

Mainly syrah, at 66 per cent of the blend, this full-bodied red employs the French custom of adding a small amount of white viognier to lift the aromatics and draw out syrah's flavour. Darned if it's not reminiscent of a northern Rhône red, with its firm plum-blackberry fruit, white pepper and lavender overtones. But there's also a telltale South African soupçon of melted rubber. Good value, and ideal for gamey red meats. $14.99 in B.C., various prices in Alta., $14.19 in Sask., $13.99 in Man., $16.75 in Que., $15.99 in N.B., $15.99 in N.S., $15.49 in Nfld.
