This high-end, single-vineyard offering is built on a ripe foundation, with a rounded, silky texture and plump tropical fruit. Unlike many West Coast chardonnays in its price range from, say, farther south in California, it never gets cloying, thanks to deft handling in the winery. The Block 5 underwent no malolactic fermentation, so the acids are bright and clean. And rather than lavishing the wine with heavy oak, CedarCreek uses large, 500-litre puncheons to keep the wood influence in check for a slightly toasty and delectably tangy finish. Available direct from the B.C. winery, cedarcreek.bc.ca.
