Yannick and Shantelle Bisson at their home in the east end of Toronto. The contemporary structure was built by Rambod Nasrin’s Upside Inc. on designs by architect Gordon Ridgely, but Mr. and Mrs. Bisson took an active hand. Eric McClelland of Fleur-de-lis Interior Design Inc.did the interiors.

‘You would not believe how many people walk in and say: ‘I love this place, this is totally my style,’ and I’m thinking to myself ‘No, it’s not, it’s my style and Shantelle and I did all of this,’ says Mr. Bisson with a laugh. ‘But it’s true, when [Modernism is] done right it lends itself to a lot more people’s taste than you might think.’

The home features 10-foot ceilings on the main floor, and 8-foot ceilings in the walkout basement. ‘It’s almost like a house on a beach,’ says the builder, Rambod Nasrin.

Built by Mr. Bisson, the raised fireplace mantle has little cubbyholes with removable covers so future Bisson grandchildren can hide treasures inside.

The stairs have ipe treads which are so strong, Mrs. Bisson says their two big dogs have yet to make a mark on them, while their concrete floors have scratches all over the place.

The master bedroom has a fair bit of wallpaper. ‘I enjoy wallpaper and I really think it has its place, but there were some papers that I wasn’t a fan of,’ says Shantelle Bisson, ‘so I just said ‘Hang them, they better work out’
