The question
I have acquired a beautiful 1960s teak dining set. But while I love the clean lines of that period, how do I make it look more 21st-century while retaining the sixties vibe?

Whether your table is sixties teak or a French antique, you need a clean, modern environment to set the stage. The walls need to be chalky white with a blue tone that blends into a white ceiling.
For lighting, combine pot lights, ceiling fixtures and wall sconces. The recessed lighting should look modern, but let the fixtures, perhaps a mobile-style chandelier, tie into the sixties vibe.
The floors can go either way, but I prefer them in a dark colour with a low sheen. A flat French limestone would be super-elegant and make the table the true star of the show.
I have to admit that 1960s style isn't my first love, but, as long as you follow the rules of good design, the table will work. It's an expression of your taste. In decor as in fashion, there's plenty of room for personal preferences. Just look at how many interpretations there are of the LBD (little black dress).
