Go wide: Ticking and pinstripes are classic, but extra-wide bands offer extra oomph, especially in Technicolor shades. In general, feel free to vary widths, but use bigger stripes to anchor a space, as the cabanastyle rug does here. Lune outdoor fabric in colour 19 (on wall), $19.99 a yard at Designer Fabrics. Left Twist Cube in blue by Frank Gehry, $250 (U.S.) at Design Within Reach. Candle, $7, San Remo goblet by Impulse!, $8, Arcobaleno water bottle by Maxwell & Williams (label not included), $8.98. President’s Choice salad bowls, $3 each at select Loblaws stores and Real Canadian Superstores. Jean Vier tea towel, $25 at Fresh Home & Garden. Pier 1 Imports 5-by-7-foot citrus stripe rug, $199.95. Think pink (and orange): Black and white stripes are stylish, but safe. For a fresher interpretation, opt for less expected colour pairings, such as red and blue, black and yellow or, as in this delicious vignette, orange and hot pink. Merino wool throw by Thomas Eyck, $525 (U.S.), Almoco flatware, $50 (U.S.) for a 5-piece setting at Design Within Reach. President’s Choice large salad bowl, $6, Jump Kids World placemats, $1 each at select Loblaws stores and Real Canadian Superstores. Distinctly Home outdoor candles, from $7.99 each, GlucksteinHome acrylic red wine glasses, $6.99 each, Distinctly Home Isola cotton outdoor napkins, $17.95 for a set of four, GlucksteinHome napkin rings, $6 at Hudson’s Bay. Loop Rocks acrylic glasses by Jonathan Adler, $10 each at Fresh Home & Garden. Home Studio melamine striped plates, $9.99 each at Home Outfitters. Contemporary Opera Chair in fuchsia by Hauser, $499.

Tip the balance: Decorative bands don’t have to be horizontal or vertical alone. When plotting a stripe-based scheme, think on the diagonal. Here, a carpet festooned with chevrons complements an array of conventional patterns, adding interest and variety. Room Essentials beach umbrella, $22 at Target. Providence sun lounger, $795 at Elte. Hat by Nine West, $46 at Hudson’s Bay. Jean Vier beach towel, $100 at Fresh Home & Garden. Seattle reversible indoor/outdoor rug, $99.95, striped woven poof, $99.95 at CB2. GlucksteinHome pitcher and cups, $19.99 and $5.99 each at Hudson’s Bay. Faux boxwood hedge by Maclaw, $760 through www.maclawinc.ca. On model: Bikini top and bottom by Old Navy, $17.94 each through www.oldnavy.ca. Sunglasses by Oliver Peoples, $295 at Holt Renfrew.
