Paul Rowan is the vice president of design at Umbra, the Canadian housewares company he co-founded 35 years ago. With the help of his wife, Marcee Ruby, a graphics and communications pro, Rowan has made a habit of gutting and rebuilding his own homes. The latest is a three-storey former storefront in Toronto's Riverside neighbourhood.

The couple moved into the circa-1900 building just over a year ago after renovating it top to bottom according to their own design. The crowning glory is a 750-square-foot kitchen that doubles as a conference room and photo studio for Umbra. "It is a room highly conducive to creativity," Rowan says. "We like when we can share it with other people."
