Ceramic mugs by Rachael Kroeker.

Crystal Nykoluk

Rachael Kroeker is a Winnipeg-based ceramicist. She's a professional artist by training (having studied fine art at the University of Manitoba), and makes ethereal sculptures out of porcelain that play with aesthetic ideas like line, texture, colour and space.

She also has a practical side, hand-making everyday items like bowls, plates and cups. But even her most functional pieces have an element of artistry.

Her mugs, for example. Each one is carefully crafted so it is comfortable in the hand and smooth to the touch (much sanding is involved). They are also just gorgeous to look at. The shapes are simple but singular. The surfaces are marbled with colours that bring to mind Canadian nature scenes, like waves breaking on the shore or snow drifting over a frozen pond.
