Krysta Scoggins’s party room.

Country singer and songwriter Krysta Scoggins has spent more time renovating her 7,800-square-foot Sherwood Park, Alta., home than she has living in it, but it was worth the wait. The two-year renovation she embarked on in 2012 almost doubled the living space of the five-bedroom home, which she shares with her husband, Ian, and their two school-age children. The house now boasts a recording studio, a huge walk-in closet for her onstage clothing, an indoor ice-hockey rink and the ultimate bar: a basement-level entertainment area, complete with stage and disco ball, that doubles as a rehearsal space. (Scoggins is currently prepping for a North American tour in support of her latest album, Shine.) "My husband and I love going to Vegas, and we always said that when we built our dream home we would add a little bit of Vegas to it," she says. "Our Voodoo Lounge is a bar, a stage, a games room, a theatre, a place where we can have fun as a family. My kids love it."

The wave wall

"It's a two-storey-high interior wall [composed of] different sections that you see as you come down the spiral staircase. We saw something just like it in Vegas and loved it. When lit with LEDs, it gives off a really cool rippling effect."

The bar

"We wanted it to be round to include everyone in the conversation. My husband added leather padding for people to lean on, and it's back-lit with coloured LED lights."

The wine rack

"This was created for us by You Dream it We Build It, a company in Sherwood Park. I came up with the idea after first seeing something like it in a magazine. Every little section is wrapped in reflective foil and glows depending on the colour of the LED. The wine rack, like the whole room, is high-tech. It is [connected to an] iPad and operated by remote. I can change the look at will. At Christmas, I lit it red and green."

The bar stools

"My husband wanted them to have arms and a footrest to make them comfortable, and they really are. There are 12 of them."

The carpet

"This matches the wave wall, as well as the stainless-steel, wave-like front of the bar. It flows with the leather flooring, which we got at Absolute Hardwood Flooring here in Edmonton."

The leather furniture

"These black sectional couches and bar stools were all custom-made to look as if they belong to a real downtown bar – a Voodoo Lounge by another name."

The stage

"Back velvet curtains give it added drama, its floor is covered in leather and it has a fully operational soundboard with monitors, spotlights, cameras and a dance floor. I had parties here all through the Christmas period, on back-to-back nights, and this is where people really got happy."
