My mom needs a makeover. What colours suit an older woman? Add to ...

The question

I want to refresh my mom’s makeup kit. She’s 60, with silver hair and blue eyes. What colour eye shadow should she wear? And what’s the best way to apply it, considering that she has dry skin and fine lines?

The answer

Some great colours to showcase her features in the daytime are browns, golds and forest greens. They can be concentrated on the lid of the eye or used as a liner.

For the evening, smoky grey really makes blue eyes pop. Opt for matte or “sheen” formulas instead of shimmer for a more timeless and sophisticated look. When applying, she should use a shadow primer to help stop the product from settling into small lines. M.A.C.’s Prep + Prime Vibrancy Eye Primer, for example, has a brightening effect and reduces puffiness around the eyes, all while priming the lid for shadow.
