I HART Muskoka lakeside fundraiser, Muskoka, Ont.

The fundraising may have began at sunrise on July 14 in the Ontario summer enclave of Muskoka with a 50-strong group cycle led in part by three-time gold medal Olympian Marnie McBean and Fraser Chapman, co-founder of the Morning Glory Cycling Club, but it was a lakeside dock party later in the day that drew the Muskoka set out en masse. The full day affair, dubbed I HART Muskoka, was the inaugural event in support of HART (Human Anti-Trafficking Response Team), a non-for-profit founded last year by Kelly Grier-Nadal, Ashley Wade and Tamara Bahry. Their organization raises funds for Victim Services York Region, which supports survivors of sex trafficking in the Greater Toronto Area by providing crisis housing, emergency services as well as support for the long term. The Sam Roberts Band performed on a dock-cum-stage, supermodel Cindy Crawford and her husband, Rande Gerber, navigated the party barefoot and by sundown, more than $280,000 was raised for the cause.

Dora Mavor Moore Awards VIP reception, Toronto

A few weeks earlier in Toronto, at the Winter Garden Theatre, the city’s vibrant performing arts community celebrated at the annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards on June 25. The event, presented by the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts, is now in its 39th year. A cocktail reception was given ahead of the big show, where more than 50 statues and special awards were handed out to this year’s best theatre, dance and opera creators. The musical Life After and show Jerusalem both took home six statues, and in the opera division, Orphée, produced by Against The Grain Theatre, took home five. The evening’s big female and male acting trophies were given to Michaela Washburn for Confederation & Riel and Kim Coates for Jerusalem, which marked the last time the organization will bestow gendered acting awards. Come 2019, the Doras, as they’re known, will move with the times and go gender-neutral.
