What started out as the location of temporary pop-up of a Los Angeles-based green beauty boutique has become a permanent home in Hollywood North. After three years spent in a storefront on King Street West in Toronto the Detox Market has opened the doors to a new Canadian flagship location, which joins existing stores in Yorkville and Union Station stocking natural beauty and personal care products.

Located on a bustling strip of Spadina Avenue near Richmond Street, the new store is housed in the lower level of the Reading Building. The space’s previous long-term tenant, a furrier, was at major odds with the Detox Market’s cruelty-free policy, but chief executive Romain Gaillard and marketing director Laura Townsend were able to look past thestacks of fur and leather to appreciate the unique features of the 94-year-old building. “We just kind of fell in love with it,” Townsend says. “It has all of the exposed piping and bricks and wood and so much charm and character. We didn’t want to move into a cookie-cutter storefront.” The store was designed by Suulin Architects, which introduced a West Coast-inspired aesthetic throughout in features such as an oversized sink, makeup stations and a sculpted stone and steel table used as a gathering spot for events and workshops.

The flagship offers more opportunities for customers to engage with the Detox Market’s staff about the store’s products and their ingredients, whether a shopper is looking for a new lip balm or a complete cabinet overhaul. “We don’t want people to feel pressured into buying something, we don’t want people to be unsure when they take something home,” Townsend says. “We want people to come in, learn and experience.”

The Textile Museum of Canada is launching a new charity auction this week. The Atelier Swarovski Waterschool Collection features a crystal pendant formed in the shape of a shell designed by filmmaker and environmentalist Céline Cousteau. Available in two sizes and five colours, the pendant raises funds for the Swarovski Waterschool program, an initiative Swarovski established in 2000 to protect and provide education about freshwater. Scavolini is bringing a new kitchen design to Canada. Called Mia, it was created over two years in collaboration with Michelin-starred chef and reality star Carlo Cracco. Mia features appliances inspired by the needs of a professional chef, including a tool for dehydrating food, vacuum packaging and a high-tech range hood and proofing oven, all designed with meal prep in mind. The modular system of wall panels can be set up to hold several articles such as bottle racks, containers, tablet shelves, shelf hooks, ingredient bowls and plants. Mia is on display now at the Scavolini Toronto Showroom (1330 Castlefield Ave.).

To celebrate Barbie’s 60th anniversary, Hudson’s Bay has launched its Discover This: Barbie pop-up shop. The department store tapped four female Canadian designers to create apparel and accessories inspired by the iconic doll. At select Hudson’s Bay locations in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary as well as at thebay.com, find the full collection, which includes printed overalls by Hayley Elsaesser, a 3-D chiffon flower organza dress by Narces, a ruffled top by Hilary MacMillan and jewellery by Biko. In addition, Toronto-based makeup company da lish has launched a limited-edition Barbie-inspired collection.
