Actor Kevin Bacon and his wife, actress Kyra SedgwickSHANNON STAPLETON/Reuters

Has Kevin Bacon set a new benchmark for celebrity oversharing by posting pictures of his wife's gruesome kitchen accident to his blog?

The 54-year-old star of The Following shared photos of his actress wife, Kyra Sedgwick, in a hospital emergency room on the weekend after she accidentally sliced off the tip of her index finger while chopping vegetables.

On his official WhoSay blog site, Bacon posted a picture of a very unhappy-looking Sedgwick, 47, resting on a hospital gurney while clutching a bloody gauze pad to her injured digit. Bacon added insult to the injury with his accompanying comment: "Kale isn't always healthy…if you chop the end of your finger off."

In a followup photo, Sedgwick, best known for her long-running role on the TV series The Closer, shows her gamely displaying her hugely-bandaged finger for the camera while giving a thumbs-up sign with her other hand. This time Bacon's caption is only slightly more sympathetic. "My baby is fine. All good. Still can't find the tip of that finger."

No doubt the occasional dash of gallows humour plays a role in every durable marriage – and Bacon and Sedgwick have been together an impressive 25 years –but aren't there still moments in married life that merit privacy? Even when the married couple happen to be celebrities?

Judging from the expression on Sedgwick's face, she begrudgingly agreed to the first picture to document the occasion and only looks slightly more happy in the second photo (by which time it's possible the painkillers kicked in).

The more unnerving aspect of the incident has to do with Bacon's immediate instinct to share his seeming bloodlust. How would you feel if you injured yourself at home and your spouse's reaction was to share your pain with the rest of the world?
