How old is the U.K.'s youngest grandfather? (Hint: under 30) Add to ...

Isn't it nice when children follow in their parents' footsteps?

Maybe not, when it comes to being young parents.

A 29-year-old unemployed man, Shem Davies, has become the UK's youngest grandfather this month after his 14-year-old daughter, Tia, gave birth. The Daily Mail reports that Mr. Davies said he was thrilled when his daughter delivered his first grandchild a few days before her fifteenth birthday.

"I'm incredibly proud of Tia," said Mr. Davies. "She'll be a brilliant mum."

Baby Ava Grace was born 10 weeks early by a Caesarian section and is the sixth generation of her family currently alive, according to Britain's The Sun newspaper.

The two-pound infant's father is 15-year-old Jordan Williams, whom Mr. Davies called a "decent young man." Mr. Williams had been dating Tia for 18 months prior to his daughter's birth.

The Daily Mail also reports that Mr. Williams, who recently finished his general certificate of secondary education, told the media that he is ready for fatherhood and understands the responsibilities that lie ahead, saying: "I'm captain of the school rugby team and that's like having 14 kids."

But not all the family is thrilled about their new addition. Kelly John, Tia's 30-year-old mother, told Asian News International (ANI) that having Tia give birth young, like she did, was her "worst nightmare."

"I always lectured her about contraception," she said.

But lucky for baby Ava Grace, she will have a playmate/aunt since Mr. Davies has a nine-month-old baby with his current girlfriend.

Mr. Davies is also not alone in being a young grandparent. A 23-year-old Romanian woman became the world's youngest grandmother, according to ANI, after her 11-year-old daughter gave birth to a baby boy.

But Mr. Davies is probably the first grandparent to be mistaken as the father of the newborn. The Daily Mail reports that nurses at the hospital requested he show ID to prove he was over the age of 16.
