Ron Chapple studios

He wants a car chase and she wants a happy ending.

He wants violence and gore and she wants a song and dance number.

Discounting every girl who's ever relished a Tarantino flick and every man who's shed a tear into his popcorn, a survey of 2,000 adults has reaffirmed the sexual battleground of couples' movie watching.

The survey, conducted by Direct Line, an insurer promoting a short film competition, ranked what men and women most value in a cinematic experience, and there is little overlap.

Action sequences, car chases and regular old chase scenes topped the list for guys, as did nudity and sex. War and "interrogation" were also top of mind.

Women, meanwhile, craved the "sad/tear-jerker" scene and also clamoured for tragedy and disaster, Titanic style.

Time of the month, anyone?

One in 20 women surveyed said their ideal film would be a Bollywood-style musical. Conversely, they also appreciated "straight talking male/female partners."

What did the sexes according to Direct Line agree upon?

Long films and overly complicated plots are a turnoff. Sorry, Synecdoche, New York.

Do these stereotypes bear out?
