As The Duchess of Cornwall and The Prince of Wales toured Canada this week, there was little doubt Prince Charles had wandered into bear country.

The Prince, seen here with Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2003, set off a media firestorm in Britain on Wednesday when, in a private conversation while in Canada, he reportedly compared Mr. Putin’s actions in Ukraine to moves made by Adolf Hitler. The Daily Mail said Charles made the comment during a visit to the Canadian Museum of Immigration in Halifax. The remarks were criticized by all political stripes in Britain, with Labour Party MP Mike Gapes calling for his abdication. The newspaper quoted museum volunteer Marienne Ferguson, who said her Jewish family fled to Canada from Poland as the German army approached ahead of the Second World War, as saying she told Charles about her family background and that the Prince then said to her: “And now Putin is doing just about the same as Hitler.” On June 6, the Prince is due to join his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, and leaders of the Second World War Allies — including Mr. Putin — at events in France to mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
