The question: I'm a single girl in my mid-30s looking to book a sun holiday with lots of activity and people. Suggestions?

TRAVEL CONCIERGE: If by people you mean single men who post Facebook profile photos of themselves in bath towels, then head for Hedonism Resorts in Jamaica.

But if you're not looking to meet, say, The Situation, there are many solo-friendly islands, and one with after-dark buzz is San Juan, Puerto Rico. "There are beaches close by, but there's a lot of nightlife going on there as well," says Julia Rosien, founder of travel site GoGirlfriend.com. "It's a nice way to mix the two."

Settle into a lounger on the white-sand beaches. Join a tour among the tree frogs of El Yunque rain forest. Walk the blue cobblestones of Old San Juan. Dine on the criollo cuisine, which fuses the island's Spanish, Taino and African history.

It's the big city in the Caribbean, but it's also part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, says Bob Curley, the Caribbean editor for About.com, who names the island as a top destination for both nightlife and solo travellers. "It's a great walking city."

Accommodation ranges from the chain resorts to inns called paradores. Rosien recommends checking out the bohemian Da House ( www.dahousehotelpr.com), beachfront Numero Uno ( www.numero1guesthouse.com), or W Hotel (a 20-minute flight from San Juan on the island of Vieques).
