Fullerton Bay Hotel

80 Collyer Quay, Singapore; 65-6333-8388; fullertonbayhotel.com; 100 rooms from $340. No eco-rating.

Fullerton Bay is the first hotel in Singapore on the waterfront. The lobby is the site of the historic Clifford Pier, a key landing point for many immigrants and visitors arriving by ship, and now home to trendy restaurants dishing flavours from around the world.

Design: Andre Fu – hailed as a "design master" – incorporated Clifford Pier's art deco structure into the lobby, which is decorated with Chinese screens, old leather suitcases and giant statues.

Amenities: The yoga mat and iPod docking station in your room help make up for the small gym on the top floor. The outdoor pool has a fantastic view of the city.

Rooms: Each of the 100 rooms and suites have floor-to-ceiling windows complete with a mini-balcony. The rooms are 538 square feet with high ceilings. The bathroom and bedroom are separated with a window equipped with blinds that glide down for privacy.

Food: The Landing Point offers a lovely afternoon tea with traditional scones and sandwiches, and the Malaysian dessert kueh lapis. The Clifford is a modern French bistro.

Verdict: A luxurious feel, terrific dining options both in and around the hotel, and a great location.
